FAQs

Q:  How are the sections structured? A:  Section 1 - Primary -- K-3 Section 2 - Elementary 4-5 Section 3 - Middle School 6-8 Section 4 - High School 9-12 Q:  How can I pre-register for the tournament? A:  Goto www.ChessRegister.com Once there click on View Upcoming Events.  You will see our tournament listed as the GrayKnight April 2017 Scholastic Q:  Can a player play up a section? A:  Yes!  Just let us know when you register if you want to play up a section. Q:  How many does it take to be a team? A:  A team is at least 2 players from the same school, playing in the same section.  If more than 4 are in the section, then the top 4 player’s scores are used for the team’s score and tiebreakers Q:  Will there be an unrated novice section? A:  No. Q:  What time do we need to be there the day of the tournament? A:  Make sure you are there between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. to properly complete your registration.  If have already pre-registered, then during this time you must check in.  Anyone that comes after 9:30 a.m. can still play in the tournament but will have to skip round 1. Q:  What tie break systems will you be using for the tournaments? A:  We will be using the following 3 tie break systems in this order: Cumulative Solkoff Median (Harkness) Q:  How many byes can you have in one tournament? A:  You may request up to two byes.  You must make your request known during registration.  Byes are worth ½ point.  These are different than a bye you may recieve during the tournament.  If there is an odd number of players for any round, then a bye is given out to the lowest scoring player at the time.  This kind of bye is worth 1 full point.  Q:  What is the new registration I have heard about? A:  New streamlined registration using the “Form”. Now when you come to the tournament for registration there will be two tables.  One is for players that have played in a GrayKnight Chess Association and the other for brand new players. Table 1: If you have played before your Form will already be filled out with what information we already have on you.  All you will have to do is check a few boxes, verify that everything is correct,  and pay.  That’s it.  Everything will already be filled out for you. Table 2: If you have never played in a GrayKnight Chess Association tournament then you will have to fill out the Form.  But there is only one Form for both USCF membership and to enter the tournament.  On both tables our workers will verify that all information is correct, membership status, and if entry fee has been paid.  Only then will it be passed on to the TD for computer input.  The rounds should start very very close on time. If you pay for entry fee at the tournament the price is $20.
